01. Preliminaries - Once you have decided to learn how to ski you must turn your attention to the most important matter for beginners, advanced pupils and "big shots" alike—the equipment. The smallest mistake in your equipment or bad advice when buying it may mean all the difference between pleasure and misery, success or failure.

02. The Turns - The basic position for the snow plough turn is the snow plough' position which must be held throughout the complete turn. The centre of gravity of the body during the entire figure remains constant between the skis. Now do not do anything more than is asked of you. First, a turn to the right. Snow plough position=basic position.

03. The Swings - So far you have continued to do nothing but slow turns and you are itching to put on speed and to let the snow fly up behind you on the broad untouched slopes as you swing down to the valley. As the name implies, for swinging you need great speed. Another essential is the forward lean or Vorlage.

04. Jumping - "The finest thing in ski-ing
Has always been the spring.
You'll find you get much more applause
Than when you do the swing."

Anyone who has done a little ski-ing and feels fairly confident should try and learn to do moderate jumps for he may suddenly come upon a small obstacle such as a stream or a ditch. Faced with this danger, make a small jump and you will be completely master of the situation.
